Haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) was started in India in 1983. An informal group was established in 2003 to provide a platform all physicians involved in HSCT to meet annually. This Indian Stem Cell Transplant Registry (ISCTR) group functioned to coordinate the activities of this group from till 2019. This was coordinated through support from the Department of Haematology, Christian Medical College, Vellore.
The Indian Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation was registered in 2019 and held its first meeting in 2020. It now has over 100 HSCT centres representing the full spectrum of HSCT activities from across the country. The ISBMT organizes an annual scientific meeting to bring together the multidisciplinary teams involved in HSCT. It also carries out other training and educational activities.
